Do you take insurance?

No. I operate on a fee-for-service basis and I am not paneled with any commercial insurance company — payment is due at the time of service. Most patients then submit a superbill to their insurance company and are reimbursed through their out-of-network benefits. What comes back depends on your specific plan, so it is worth checking before the first appointment.

Why fee-for-service instead of insurance?

Time. Insurance-scale psychiatry pays for short visits, and short visits are where a full history gets missed. Time is the most important part of the doctor-patient relationship — fee-for-service is what protects it. You pay the practice directly, and the appointment is long enough to actually do the work.

What is a superbill, and how does reimbursement work?

A superbill is an itemized receipt carrying the codes your insurance company needs. You pay the practice directly, submit the superbill to your insurer, and reimbursement comes back to you under your out-of-network benefits. We provide the superbill, and if a claim is processed incorrectly, we will work with you in good faith to get it corrected.

Do I have to pay the full fee up front?

Payment is due at the time of service, but there is one way to soften it: some of our patients use Thrizer, a service that manages out-of-network benefits. With Thrizer, you can enroll in an option where you only pay your co-insurance rate up front while the claim is handled for you.

Will my student insurance plan cover this?

Accepted Answer

Often, yes — most Boston-area college student plans carry excellent out-of-network benefits for psychiatry. We regularly work with students from Harvard, MIT, Northeastern, Boston University, Boston College, Tufts, and Berklee. Reach out to the office and we can check your student benefits with you.

What does treatment cost?

The full fee schedule is listed above — the initial consultation is the longest appointment, and follow-ups are billed by type: combined therapy and medication, or medication alone. If your situation does not fit those categories, ask. The answer will be a number, not a surprise.
